Like all the Sevii Islands, they're based on the archipelagos south of Tokyo and are not part of the Kanto prefecture. Three Island in particular is based on the island of Hachijou.

There might be some sort of pun with Hachi (8), Dunsparce (dex 206) but it seems unlikely. Trying to figure out if there are any Tsuchinoko related legends about Hachijou didn't find much but it is interesting all of the trainers native to Three Island are female.

Thanks for reminding me how hype I was to play the Kanto remakes back in my early teens, my local Nintendo magazine hyped the fuck out of sevii islands and I basically speedrun the game to get to cinnabar and do the extra quest, I enjoyed it a lot, back in gen 1 the Blaine and Giovanni gyms where too close by story wise, sevii islands helped the pacing in my opinion and the johto ost is always appreciated.
