Gen 4 was a bit better than Gen 3. Gen 5 was the peak of the franchise. Gen 6 was meh. Gen 7 was good but had a different style than the typical pokemon game so a lot of people hate it. And everything after that is total shit and there's no coming back.

Most of the best games in the main series came out after you stopped playing (Platinum, HGSS, and BW2), but overall, no it got way shittier. The main series games are extremely barebones and lazy, and the franchise doesn't really have as many experimental side series as it did when you were involved with it.

There've been a lot of great romhacks though.
