Ghetsis has had 3 Pokemon that, by all rights, should've fucking killed him already. Those 3 being his Life Orb holding Hydriegon that uses Frustration at full power, the mind controlled Kyurem and the legendary dragon he stole from N. Ghetsis can also confidently say "I do indeed trust my "partner." "
Why more people aren't using their Pokemon like tools is beyond me, Ghetsis is proof that you don't need to give a single shit about your Pokemon to be a powerful trainer, his teams are genuinely comparable to other champions like Blue, Lance and Wallace.
The better question is "Why should I treat my Pokemon with love and care?" Outside of Generation 6 onwards, the only reason to care about your Pokemon outside of 1 move is to get certain evolutions, but as Ghetsis has already demonstrated with his stolen Tao Trio, you can just steal Pokemon that have already evolved through high happiness.
