Tyranitar was a bit of a literal who until people saw Lance's Tyranitar in Stadium 2 and the mother Tyranitar towards the end of the Johto saga. His popularity went through the roof in gen 3. Heracross's popularity also shot to the moon in gen 3 since people could finally catch the damn thing after being cockteased by the anime for 2 years.
