I maintain that talking to Pokemon isn't particularly unique, it's only because he's been groomed his whole life to be the face of a huge propaganda movement and him being a recurring character that it's given more importance than it actually is.
I don't think you not personally caring about characters means it's bad writing. There's nothing wrong with their character arcs, other than the fact that they happen independently of you (which is a personal issue, not a writing one.) Things can happen to people and you don't have to be an active participant in it. Why would you need to personally get involved in Bianca or Hugh's personal struggles?
Again, it's your opinion, I just disagree with it.
