Gen 5 barely has an excuse, but even than it could have been 2 version instead of 4.

You can still have the two-version structure in one game, just make it so you pick what version you want at the start, and the only way to change it is to start over from scratch, I think they did this in Yo-kai watch 3 or something, every version exclusive should just do that.
