While III and IV did last 4 years apiece, stagnation set in by the end of the Gens (hence all the bridge spin-offs with new 'mons at the end of Gen III) they avoided that in IV by waiting till final year before releasing HGSS, where they got Emerald out in 2004, in anticipation of DP in 2005, then saw sales drop as there was no games for a year and a half.
