I always really liked the style of original Japanese covers for gen 1. They look like the logos for some pro sports competition which fits the sports-shounen feel of the early series.

I've always appreciated them a lot too and the other old art.
If you've never seen the art from the Bandai made Pokémon Collectible Card Game (made before the TCG) I recommend looking it up. They're not logo style like these but they feel sportish to me because each Pokémon is using a unique move.

Seeing how all three starters and pikachu fit in that round logo was also very satisfying, the elemental symbol next to them with the kanji inside, it's so good. The American versions of the cover seem cheap and uninspired.
