>>49220442I think it goes like this: You send in a card and pay a fee to grade the card. What you pay can vary based on how fast you want it to be graded (express grading is $300 a card right now maybe) plus a premium based on what its after-market price is at the moment. Not 100% sure if that's how it goes down or not though.
If you sent in a modern common VS sending in a vintage expensive holo, you'd get upcharged for the holo being more valuable.
Apart from preserving the card, getting a high grade on a card basically says "this is in perfect condition, so it's worth more".
I'll probably never get a card graded but I have cracked a few open. I don't like how bulky slabs are
