They were good as simple but very replayable single player RPGs, but competitive completely ruined it. Pokémon should have died after gen 2.

No, because I just thought it was neat from a technical aspect that every pokemon really was unique and went back to enjoying MY pokemon regardless of their competitive abilities. Some of my best friends always struggled with math or english, doesn't mean they aren't awesome at other things and a lot of fun to have around so why would my rattata not being top percentage make it any less fun to have on my team.

Deffo. I chased after EVs and Pokerus in hopes that I could magically change the predetermined stats bounds for pokemon. Stats largely determine how I use or enjoy a pokemon even in casual play.
