In diamond and pearl you can just enter it, a quick dialogue and leave. In platinum, the same as above but fantina is waiting on the tables on the side and you just talk to her. This ain't the pokestudio or hoenn's super contest where it's a mandatory tutorial

Pretty sure OP left the thread feeling like an idiot, but you get the gym leader to appear in the Hearthome gym by going to Celestic Town first and obtain surf. You never have to touch contests.
