Regional variants make no sense lore-wise because Pocket MONSTERS are not animals; plenty of them were established GEN FUCKING ONE to be universal. Go look up Arcanine, which is apparently a Chinese legend. Is there gonna be a "Chinese regional variant" of Arcanine? Snubbul is based on a British Bulldog, what the fuck would a "regional version" of a national concept even be other than "another breed of doge"?
Corollary to this, in execution they merely serve as a way to put in more Dark or other types that they feel obliged (for some reason) to "fill out" because they weren't creative enough to do it naturally so they feel like they have to force it artificially. As

You know original Pokemon? It has Cubone and Marowak, who if you use your brain are related to Kangaskhan, and in a story subplot, related to Gastly. Miltank and Tauros are related, but don't need a big "HURRR JOHTO VERSION" slapped on them because the visual storytelling is strong enough on its own. Why isn't Mewtwo called "Mew: Rocket form"? Why not just call Bellossom "Vileplume: Johto form"? They're effectively the same - slightly altered stats, with a different spin on the same concept. The reason is because they used to not be lazy and talentless.
