Now that Gen 9 is close, what animal will be the fire type starter? Ox, horse, sheep/goat and snake are the only remaining animals

They're definitely turning into a minotaur, a centaur and the sheep equivalent, but they'll still start as a calf, a foal and a lamb, which all look very similar

The hint Masuda gave for the next region was "redwood," so I'm assuming California. Of the options left, snake and horse make the most sense for a CA region. For the record, I'll also predict a bear for one of the other starters. Sea otter and sea lion have been done before so bear could be the water but makes more sense for grass. Not sure what third could be for water. Another turtle? A lizard, like a skink? Coastal bird like a heron? Maybe a dolphin or whale could be cool.

They can always be creative with the design, though. A sheep can have fire instead of the wool or fluffy fire-like wool around the body.
The foal can have fire on the hooves instead of the mane (to not imitate Ponyta too much) and the calf might be designed rounder and lacking flames in the first stage design, like Fennekin.

Similar quadruped animals that can be designed really distinct from each other.

Well some of the other Asian zodiacs that follow the Chinese swap out some animals for others. IIRC the ox becomes a water buffalo or an elephant depending on the culture, for example, based on what analogous animals they developed around. A fire elephant would be nuts especially bc it would drive people on both sides of the zodiac argument bananas

Of what we don't have, these are alternates from the other Asian zodiacs

For what it's worth, there's other animals that replace old ones. Pig can be deer, elephant or turtle. Monkey can be turtle as well. And rat can be camel, for some reason. Also there's Western Zodiacs, not the one you think. Native Americans had stuff like Bat, Frog, Eagle, Raven... It never ends

they actually aren't considered big cats, as they aren't in the panthera genus OR capable of roaring! But yes feliformes are much more obviously related to one another than caniforms. Maybe it would be more like comparing a bear and a raccoon?
