>>49217908On the surface, I think the initial problem was that, outside of Japan at least, Gamefreak didn't bother to tell anyone that humans had only started to study Pokemon around two centuries ago. This meshes well with eggs being a big deal since new Pokemon were being discovered and thus theoretically new methods of reproduction and birth. The problem is that they changed the relationship between humans and Pokemon after and at most left little bread crumbs of possible historical explanations. Other than one Sinnoh legend, there is no reason to not assume that humans had domesticated some Pokemon mych like we have domesticated some animals. This also ties in with my original point, in at least Gen I regular animals existed besides humans and Pokemon. You didn't have to bother with Pokemon for food and other items when you could just domesticate and hunt regular animals.
The alternative explanation is that since breeding was one of the biggest things introduced in Gen II and has since become a huge part of the games, Gamefreak wants people to know it exists and that they should try it, even if it makes NPCs look stupid in hindsight.
