I wish we got to battle the Seven Sages. I get why they didn't do it, kinda, but they clearly have pokemon and intended to use them at N's castle. And Team Plasma was sorely lacking in admins, or just trainers with slightly stronger and more varied teams who weren't N. As it is the sages may as well not even sexist.

It's a cool moment but the more you think about it the dumber it gets. Everything about the castle makes no sense and the bit with the gym leaders showing up is nice but not very effective since you've already beaten them all before and you have no idea how strong the Sages are supposed to be. Why would you assume the lower-tier leaders even stand a chance? Being able to fight one and either lose or barely win and THEN have the leaders show up to stall the other Sages would've been a lot better.

But seriously, yeah they should've have boss battles and it's something that B2W2 fixed with Zinzolin and the Shadow Triad. I could think of some nice areas to fit them like the Sage encounters in Pinwheel Forest, Castelia City building, Cold Storage, and Dragonspiral Tower. Also, newly added encounters in Chargestone Cave and Abundant Shrine. That covers six Sage battles with different teams.

Gym leaders in Gen5 have a badge system, where they use weaker mons depending on your badge level. It was like this with Cheren in B2W2, since he couldn't use his original team. So, they could've showed up the Sages with their strongest teams.

It's unfortunate you don't get to experience that by choosing the order you fight the leaders in. It also doesn't really address the problem since there's no indication of how strong the Sages are. Are they evenly matched with seven full power gym leaders, or are they just supposed to delay you? If it's the latter then they're more of a roadblock than a threat.

The Sages are attacking you all at once via Horde Battle. This is where ludonarrative dissonance comes to play, because forget about levels and stats for a second. Remember when Lance helped you out against a Rocket admin who was planning to ambush you 2 on 1? Double battles are one thing, but a six trainer battle is overwhelming and I don't think you can command a full team all at once against six trainers with one pokemon each. They may even have fully evolved pokemon.

Volo with Arceus sounds Unique enough to me, whereas N beating the champion before you is a repetition of Blue, it's not even 100% unique lmao, there'll be no champion in PLA, you lost the part where training pokemon isn't a thing there. N though it's factually the champion by League's rules, before you beat him and GUESS WHAT the plasma palace is exactly behind the league lol

It always bothers me that there's basically two plots in each game aka "beat the league" and "deal with the evil team/box legend", and they're always completely separated from one another. When confronting the legendary it feels like the climax to the story, so to then follow that up with "oh yeah time to go get another badge I guess" and fight more trainers with unevolved pokemon is so fucking dumb. B/W finally did it properly, where both of these threads lead to one singular final battle and ending sequence, it's actually done really well. Why they never do this again I don't know but god damn is it stupid.

Because the "ebin legendary climax" was always tacked on and a symptom of "we need to go bigger" following Pokemania's success.
The signs were already there in GSC when Team Rocket wasn't woven into your journey as decently as RGBY (either running into them by chance or having to deal with them to get to someone/something you needed) and instead a blatant roadblock every time they showed up (especially having unrelated NPCs who don't fuck off until you do the Team Rocket-related thing), but at least they still had the decency to conclude the "B-Plot" with letting you get back to what you were doing with no Legendaries involved unless you really wanted to.

Yeah, they should've axed the evil team/box art legend plotline entirely, kept the super basic gym challenge structure, and focused on exploration/worldbuilding. The villain plots have always been dogshit and GF are terrible writers, but are actually good at character and setting design. It complements their strengths and drastically improves the series.
For some reason people think gen 5/7 were good writing though. And no, "best written pokemon games" aren't an argument when even their best is shit.

But that's not very compelling, it's not like the player is on a time limit. There's no rush. If it was a time-sensitive situation you being able to get past them would be compelling, otherwise you might as well just stick around and help the gym leaders beat the Sages.

Except it didn't, because the conclusion of the Team Plasma story and the conclusion of the game where you fight Alder are completely separate. They briefly merge but they don't conclude at the same time. It's novel but isn't really that different from previous games, aside from the first round of the League being a bait and switch. I don't really mind the evil team stuff and the League stuff being separate, I just don't like when the evil team stuff is a world-ending calamity that you alone end up stopping.
