It was a joke mon based off of an Ultraman kaiju. Blackface isn't a thing outside of America because Americans are fucked up dumbasses, and even then back in the 90s it was a non-issue until one guy wrote an article about it even though he knew nothing about Pokemon. Yes, blackface is nothing new at all and they would've grown up with it in manga and cartoons already, they were Toriyama fans after all, they just didn't know how serious it's usually taken in the US, though only one person really gave a shit ultimately

It’s not blackface and anyone who thinks it is are retarded. Do you think real black people’s faces are so dark, it’s a literal silhouette even in a bright setting? Seeing thick lips isn’t enough, nor is seeing a dress; hell, luscious and long blonde hair is most certainly not part of their style. Whether it’s change from black to purple was good on it’s design is debatable, but I don’t see many complaining about how it looks worse now.
It infuriates me so much that mongrels here are so obsessed with race, but I’m not gonna rant because that’s literally /pol/shit.

The general opinion is that Nidoking was based on Toho Godzilla's "Baragon," being a horned burrowing monster, but Gabora probably had a hand in it. The burrowing monster obsessed with eating uranium would explain the random poison typing (it was also modified from Baragon's suit anyway)

in the case of Woo, it's a ghost ice yeti thing. Granted Jynx isn't part ghost, but you see what they were obviously going for. It did have a psychic connection with the girl in the village though. It would be cool to see a ghost Jynx form, but I suspect we're never gonna see her in the spotlight again.

The Japanese simply didn't think, like most Europeans, that Africans would get upset at their physical features being portrayed in a cartoony way.

Why is it even considered wacists? Oh right, because a bunch of Europeans worship blacks, so in 19th century America, Europeans were so obsessed with blacks, that they wanted to shove them into their media, but there weren't many blacks in Northern America so a bunch of thing began painting their faces black and behaving like them because they worship blacks that much and found their antics amusing. So honestly, not all that different from 2021 USA.
