Pokemon made more sense if they existed alongside animals as relatively recent phenomena.

Zubat is boring if it's just a replacement for bats. But if it's actually a boss among bats, it would be interesting.

They were never a "recent phenomena"
But yeah, Pokemon makes more sense with regular animals existed as inferior creatures whose sole purpose is to serve as food for superior beings (be it humans or pokemon) than the bullshit we have now in which pokemon eat each others (basically cannibalism since they can breed and communicate) and humans eat pokemon (basically eating highly intelligent pets).

People eat pigs anon.. Pigs are fiercely intelligent and of ALL animals in the animal kingdom, their body tissues are the most compatible with human tissue. Same goes for cows, they have best friends and favourite humans in their lives.
It's not going to stop me eating a bacon cheeseburger, just as it didn't stop people eating Slowpoke tails.

I agree the regular animals existing makes more since, but Pokémon have been eaten by humans and other Pokémon since the beginning. I remember Pidgeotto flat-out trying to eat a Caterpie, and Farfetch’d’ dex explicitly calls it a delicacy
