Realize how much you can benefit by backtracking through an area that might provide a useful TM or just enough extra loot to sell for a really good game corner move or even a rare pokemon for your dex/party.
The best way to play Johto is living in it. I also like doing hardcore nuzlockes of it every once in a while because a lot of the early battles are surprisingly strategic depending on your catches and such. They give you a limited pool of pokemon, but they have some nuance and interesting movesets for the most part.
