These games easily had the 2nd worst routes/dungeons/cities in a pokemon game, behind sword and shield. Gamefreak had no idea how to design a game in 3D but did so anyway, they should've stayed with what they had built in gen 5. The 3DS pokemon games will be remembered for being the most insulting entries in the series.

It was actually trash. Started the trend of having towns and cities with non-enterable buildings. One of the towns is literally just a set piece for a battle between you and Hau.

alola's routes were extremely linear with no real exploration, the only real thing i remember liking was that abandoned grocery store but even then it was just a den to catch mimikyu. I remember being excited to see a jungle in pokemon and was so disappointed with how they did it, just a complete trainwreck.

I've been enjoying my first playthrough of swsh, but this was just abysmal. Whoever was involved in designing this needs to be fired and publicly shamed for not doing their fucking job. I know. We went from Castelia and Lumiose being the most involved and explorable city hub in the series to shit like Hammerlocke and Hau'oli being a bunch of fucking nothing either condensed into one straight line or two straight lines with multiple loading zones.
Pokemon really did die with the National Dex.

Almost every route has an optional landmark to explore or alternate path in it. The only way to think Alola doesn't have exploration is to never try to explore.

Thats exactly what was wrong with it, the exploration was formulaic and boring. I've played every generation and I always try to explore each route and catch all the pokemon on it when I play, sun and moon had the absolute worst routes in my opinion. They were all boring corridors with a "landmark" thats really just a room with different pokemon in it. There wasn't anything discernible between the routes and it had no real soul or tangibility. It was a real shame because there were tons of cool pokemon in those games, but the actual gameplay/story/routes/gyms were so boring and bland it made beating the game a huge slog.

Why do none of the cities in SWSH have anything going on that needs solving? There are no dungeons or side stories, no buildings full of villains to beat up, nothing exciting to get involved in. I'm just going from A-B and collecting a badge. I even like the gym missions as fun little distractions from battling, but it seems like there's nothing going on in the world other than the gym challenge.

I would never count their routes as having any exploration because they're all too formulaic and boring. Each route was merely pressing forward to the next cut scene. Think about how underwhelming wela volcano park, paniola ranch, lush jungle, the grand resort and mount hokulani all were, there was just nothing there man. It was such an empty hollow world.

Gen 7 had the best:

I also like the Ultra Beasts. I was skeptical when they were revealed but I think they handled the concept really well.

Now the bad stuff:

>That idiotic Plaza. It was such a terrible downgrade from PSS that it seems like it almost had to be a deliberate choice to want to waste people's time with useless bullshit and loadings.
Also, the routes were very simple and I did not care for Z-Moves even a little bit, the move animations take so damn long that I rather did not ever use them.

The only true disappointing examples you gave were Wela Volcano and the Resort. Lush Jungle was amazing, especially the secret cave that you can only enter with Strength. And Paniola Ranch was great too

There was definitely exploration. Seaward Cave, Kalae Bay, Melemele Sea, Ten Carat Hill, Haina Desert etc. They were sprinkled all over. The only reason why it feels different is because Alola's map design is much more "linear" because it makes it's map dynamic and fitting for a 3D environment rather than just porting a map like in Gen 6.
