>>49254283A few ways to make a decent rival in my opinion.
>Jerk typeJerk type of rival should put the players skills to the test while also acting better then you, because they should be when they are like badge ahead of you, basic template, but try to work on how they react to losing, are they a cry baby? Shrug it off, cope by say it's a fluke, or maybe they actually grow respect for you every victory because you've managed to keep up so you become a equal to them? the flair mostly come from how they acespt defeat and how it will make them grow. Little aspects, how they battle you, do they have some sort of honnor and heal you before a fight? Or do they try to take every advantage and beat you even if you crippled?
You can give them a weaker starter because they are so confident in beating you with type disadvantage because you suck, and make it higher level to back that up, just make sure they plug up the disadvantage early it's move or just a pokemon that can counter the starter. But that's if you want to shake it up.
>FriendlyA friendly rival can work, but the issue with modern versions is that all of them are to nice, Make sure the player knows they are a Rival by not making them a pushover personailty wise, they can easily get along with the player character but will always attempt to get ahead no matter what because they are competitive, maybe give them some snark, not fully rude but they will tease you a bit if they get a W under their belt, they should heal you as taking advantage of you being might puts the friendly part off.
