Other games have soft level caps with carefully constructed amounts of exp given before you have to resort to slow grinding. This has to have a hard level cap because if it didn't you'd be overlevelled instantly.

Automatic level scaling is easily the worse. I get the developers don't want people to grind their way out of tough battles, but it just leads to any sense of progression being lost once you have the evolutions/moveset you want.
