Can you tell me why everybody hates sword and shield? It's not perfect but I enjoyed the playthrough, postgame and online seems pretty sweet as well. The link code matchmaking makes 0 sense, but other than that I don't get the hate?

The national Dex controversy put a bad taste in many people's mouths far before release. It had redeeming qualities and I think a lot of people would have enjoyed it somewhat (and probably played it anyway). It had flaws but it hating it became like not wearing masks for some people

What's not to get? It's everything wrong with the newer games dialed up to 11. Short hallway routes with ZERO optional caves or towns, the plot is told through exposition dumps by sonia or not enough in some cases (who are macro cosmos) and the towns while big have fuck all to do in them.
Gold and Silver felt like a more lived in world thanks to it's phone calls and repeatable weekly events. NPCs in SWSH care about only the league which is done after the story. The novelty of the wild area also wears off fast and discourages exploration even further since just stuff every pokemon in that one area without it making sense biome wise.
I enjoyed the DLC and the spectacle of gyms but it doesn't redeem the half-assed maingame imo

OG SWSH is bad. The worst part of the game is the lack of exploration. There are no twisty caves or routes nowhere to get lost, and then very little backtracking in the post game. Story is also not good, which is a pokemon thing, but still worth mentioning. TPC is trying to figure out how to tell interesting stories with a silent player character and failing. Their idea is to strip the player of any agency in the actual story and constantly tell them how great they are. It's nauseating, but better than having the character be a sidekick to lillie in gen7. Overall TPC just has very little talent at anything beyond designing pokemon and marketing, but yeah, the exploration is by far the biggest issue. Without it every playthrough feels functionally the same.

Because the haters are more vocal on the hate threads than the lovers. It was decent and fun for what it was. It's not perfect but it does the job correctly. That's probably why, it's not exceptionnal and a lot of people are expecting GF to do exceptionnal games like Mario and Zelda for example because they put their expectations way too high. GF isn't capable and has never been capable of giving these people what they wanted.
Though, I will admit, after SwSh, as much as I enjoyed it on paper (Dynamax Adventures were such a good idea for me for example), I won't buy another mainline Pokémon game for a long while, if not forever, if that's all there is to Pokémon now, with one exception but I won't tell it, it's kinda dumb.

However, it was a massive disappointment for Pokemon's first console mainline game. Outside of the Wild Area, which was not even particularly impressive, it was essentially just a 3DS game upscaled. The routes were very linear with zero exploration, the fights were super easy outside of Leon (who while not insanely difficult, was a fun challenge), the story was essentially nonexistent and was probably the worst out any game besides maybe X/Y. The cutscenes that were just repetitive to an extreme and served no purpose as well, dragging the game to a crawl whenever you entered that section. Also, Dynamax was stupid, and I'm still salty that they gutted Mega Evolution for it.

Now, they weren't horrific games. They were fine. I did enjoy my time. But they were not a massive leap for the Pokemon franchise as main games, and when you factor in the Dexit on top of that with no real meaningful increase in quality from either gameplay or presentation (HIGH. QUALITY. ANIMATIONS.), they certainly left a bitter taste in the mouth.

Crown Tundra was pretty cool though.

Spoiled western manchildren will never be able to replicate the flood of dopamine and serotonin their young minds produced when playing games as a kid and will hate game devs for it forever. This is the reality across the entire games industry. Nobody wants to put effort into enjoyment, they want to be spoonfed novelty and excitement and then mentally thrash around like an actual monkey when it's inevitably not enough. Combine that with the increase in literacy and pseudo-intellectual pretension brought on by the internet, and you get an entire body of work on why game is bad any time a new entry in a long running series announced, mostly written very poorly and frequently before the game is even released.

Didn’t hate it but was a step down from SM. Characters, music, & Pokémon were fine (a bit more misses than last gen’s) but the progression and story were awful. Dynamax killed my interest in competitive this Gen. DLCs were nice but I don’t see how people see them as making the games suddenly good (Mustard and Peony were some of the best characters in this franchise though). Definitely overhated but most of its criticisms are justified.

Shsw is a worse case than what happened with XY

$60 pricetag for a base game with obvious cut corners and lack of polish and the "post game" is just paid dlc.

Loved my playthrough and having fun with the DLC content, mostly Dynamax Adventures and Galarian Tournament rematches with whack-ass teams.

If literally just made a remake and added cutscenes to the story and better animations it'd be my favorite pokemon game so far

My biggest problem is that as a region, Galar fucking sucks. I don't like XY much but I can least admit that another game set in Kalos has the potential to be much better, bc Kalos itself isn't really the problem. Galar is nothing but hallways with mostly bland areas and is barely fleshed out beyond the surface level, with few exceptions like Ballonlea, the DLC areas and maybe Hammerlocke. Pokemon is supposed to be an adventure, so it's pretty fatal when I couldn't give a fuck about having one in this shitty region. They'd need to add more stuff than B2W2 did to make me ever want to go back, a complete Galar reboot is what it needs, but i doubt it'll ever get it.

I just played through it again for the first time since launch, and my opinions have shifted slightly.

It's not as bad as I first thought, but it's still a bad game. Sonia and your rivals stop the flow of the game way too often, usually is such a systematic way that it breaks the emersion (Enter town/route, plot/battle - Exit town/route, plot/battle). Also, out of your 3 rivals, Hop has the most screen time, and yet I feel like they could have dropped him and given the other two more time to be fleshed out, and the game would have been all the better for it.

Theres also the fact that I've been actively avoiding battles, and I'm still 10+ levels higher than everything else.

That said, I'm giving the DLC a try, and it is a lot of fun, like, if the full game felt more like this, I'd have been okay with it. It's a bit weird that every pokemon has the same level, but thats a minor gripe.

I can tell you why you enjoyed it, you dont play too many other games besides pokemon, likely havent played too many older pokemon games either.

The only part that really bothers me is that theres so many 3rd stage pokemon casually strolling around. Like, I wouldn't mind finding an Electivire deep inside a labyrinth like power plant full of puzzles or something (Wait, did these games even have any sort of puzzle outside of gyms?), but having it just sort of strolling next to a town is... weird?

Hop was literally, "My bro is the champ, and I wanna be the champ too!". Don't get me wrong, theres nothing wrong with that, but after a few encounters, it started to feel like he had run his course.

For all intents and purposes, from the wildly different gameplay focus and progression to the focus on Kanto pandering and gimmicks, Gen 7/8 are spinoffs.

I was led to believe by marketing (official and fan created) that the jump to being on console was going to improve the way the game was to be played but after seeing the gameplay trailers I was left disillusioned and felt no desire to even play it pirates let alone reward gamefreak for sticking to their 1990 video game design manuals.
The gameplay looked no different from Gen 6 and I had already left my copy of sun unfinished because I lost interest after getting to the pseudo Pokémon league in what felt like no time at all. Im looking at PLA tentatively as I feel the gameplay will still not be enough for me to play over any other videogame.

Shame cause I love nearly all the galarian Pokémon.

It's among the worst games in the franchise, only BDSP is worse because that's just a worse version of a game that I had already played a decade ago. Only thing that SWSH did right was overworld encounters, that's it, everything else is abysmal

It's not as horrible as most people make it out to be, but it's not as memorable as other games (RSE, DPPt, BW, B2W2 IMO).
One of the good parts of this game has to be the use of my favorite trope. The one where a character is an idiot, but is extremely strong.

Also I like the fact a Wobbuffet was one of the pokemon that carried me throughout the game, even landing the final blow on Leon's Charizard.
