Sword and Shield can't be compared to other 3D games because it's a Game Boy reskin and you can't interact with anything besides walking down corridors.

I prefer 2D, it made the worlds feel bigger, and leaving things to the imagination was better than the lame idle animations we have now. Sword and Shield did a better job at making a region that didn't feel tiny, but the idle animations are still lame

That's a diss to Pokemon on the gameboy which was actually open world.
More than anything, Sword and Shield is a reskin of Sun and Moon. Right down to having all the same problems.

With 2D it's easier to have a style or aesthetic. I don't care that other gba games had "better" styles, the style for the 2d pokemon games had a charm to it that was presentable while still clearly inspired by the limitations that formed the art style for the original GB/GBC titles.

Honestly I liked the style of XYORAS, which was somewhere in-between. They had tile-based maps with simplified characters models in a nice 3D overworld. It looks and plays like classic Pokemon, but with more polished and detailed environments.
