I think "expectations" is the main problem. USUM is straight up better than SM in a lot of ways, but so much of the early game is similar, and so much of the second island is still bad that people who didn't like SM weren't happy. And people who did like SM hated all the changes to Lillie's story. Me, I like all the little touches that make the game seem more alive, so USUM is exactly my shit, plus it has a reasonable amount of extra content to it. It might be the best 3DS era game, but that isn't a high bar to reach. If you really like online stuff then ORAS easily beats it, though.
