What was your team for the battle frontier bros? Of course it varies a lot depending on the facility, but my main one was Metagross, Latios, and Blissey.

Special Sweeper/toxic support usually.
Now that I think about it, he got more use in Platinum once Hidden Power became special for all types. As it is, Leaf Blade, Thunderpunch, and Dragon Claw was good enough coverage.

It still bugs me that Sceptile's Special Attack is so much higher than Attack. Its signature move is a physical, high-crit grass move. Blaziken had the opposite problem. Blaze Kick got better for it after Gen 4. I also still feel bad for it. Blaziken and Swampert got the better Megas.
At least Sceptile got featured in Pokken.

You can form your own team, but following ashnime canon is more recommended since you may miss out on certain events if you have a different team.
That said, you can alter some changes, such as keeping your butterfree, primeape and pidgeot without any consequence arising from it if those choices are more to your liking.
