It's not like water pokemon are particularly rare, the game even gives you a free battle with a Gyarados. Just use one as an hm slave and move on with your life.

Games with more than 6 HMs are too much, and having three as water is dumb. I'm a fan of what they bring to the games for exploration and backtracking, and I'm not bothered by missing a move slot or two, but 8 hms it's too much.

Whirlpool is the only one that really irked me. It's just Cut but Water.

Granted, it does seem clear to me that Gen 2 wants you to use HM slaves. The retarded level curve actually works (at least until Lance) when you use a team of 4 instead of 6.

I'm so glad that HM's are starting to be purged from the series. It doesn't even make sense world-building or gameplay wise.
Why can't everyday items like shears, flashlights, and surfboards can't just be used instead of needing to teach a pokemon some useless shit move you'd never use in battle besides surf? Why can't these just innate powers that Pokemon have so I don't have to teach my FLYING Pokemon how to FLY and other stupid shit?

HGSS, which are the games in the OP, are Gen 4 games and they require eight HMs. Rock Climb is mandatory to climb Mt. Silver and battle Red. Whirlpool takes the place of Defog, but unlike Defog (which was optional), Whirlpool is mandatory in the Dragon's Den as well as in Soul Silver where accessing the Whirl Islands and catching Lugia is mandatory in order to progress.

i always thought it was a fun extra bit of strategy. it's also rewarding having to tools to finally clear the area and future areas and revisit previously unreachable areas which feel more special. having a puzzle that requires multiple hm's to get through is pure kino. imagine not wanting this and just be like "hurr have all areas open to me so i can be overpowered"

It's also misleading since Rock Smash is still necessary to reach the section of the basement of the Burned Tower in Gold and Silver where the Legendary Beasts are location, making it mandatory for obtaining the Legendary Beasts despite not being an HM. Only in Crystal did it become no longer necessary. Ironically, Flash (which is entirely optional) is listed as an HM, though if you don't count it to the total then you shouldn't count Flash in Hoenn or Defog in Sinnoh either.
