It's meant as a rest stop before Sky Pillar and as a place to fly to in case you fuck up with the currents when trying to reach the Sealed Chamber. Also the home of the dude gives you the Frustration TM as well as this absolutely BASED NPC.

I forgot to mention that it's also the home of the person who can never see Mirage Island. Also the home of this scam artist. Solrock is exclusive to Ruby and Emerald, so if you're playing Sapphire you can only get one Sun Stone to evolve Gloom into Belossom. On the other hand, you can catch infinite Corsolas by fishing. They're rare, but still better than trading away your only Belossom in Sapphire.

It’s so you can do the sea current routes multiple times much more easily, you can just fly back here and the sea current are just west. By definition, not pointless. Also houses the dude who tells you about mirage island and is a stop before sky pillar.
