I have always been consistant with my reasoning for gen 2, it's called fire mouse, and they probably didn't think they would be making 8+ generations of pokemon so didn't really have much of a theme going on.
That's one I'm loose on.
But fox/dog. Meh, I accept that one as a dog because it's close enough. And canide is the dog family which hosts foxes domestic dogs, dingos bla bla bla first result of wikipedia.
The fact that it's been 8 gens and they haven't done something like, a fire octopus, or lava rock, another dragon, some sort of the thousands of other creatures clearly not linked to the zodiac makes me think It's real.
