for those of you who often nickname your pokemon, what's your method for coming up with nicknames? how seriously do you take it, etc.

I only name them if I played the game before but I'm not really creative, I just pick one letter or syllable and throw around random stuff until something sticks, a simple one like Machop=Mako or something nonsensical I don't even understand 5 minutes later, like cyndaquil=durk

Based on what the pokemon reminds me of, steel types will get names based off of Metals, or I name them after bosses in Video games.
But I make sure that I name every Rayquaza, Fug.

Urshifu is a panda and does some sort of martial arts, so I'm gonna name it Jack Black. My names in general are really bad and serve only to amuse me. The worst one I probably has is a Frosmoth that's named, in all caps, LAMP LOCATED. Either that or a Latios named BOB SAGET because when I was doing the Emerald Battle Frontier when I lost I only thought od Tourette's Guy yelling Bob Saget as a reaction.

Always try and go alt names. When I played Yellow last I had shit like Narcelepton for Snorlax, Funguile for Parasect and Leviathane for Gyarados.

Just random names I don't care about. I had that mud horse and the thing just took hits like a god damn champ so I named it Estus Flasks

Usually historical names or names of regions/geographical features I've been to or are dear to me. An example is I named a Durant from Galar Bessemer (after the English process of forging steel faster)

it's usually just what comes to me, I pretend like it's my actual pet I guess so normally it's not too silly. sometimes it might be a referential name if it reminds me of something.

I usually go into Google translate and make puns or despcriptions based on words in other languages. So for example I'll just name a Pidgey "Bird", but in Japanese. You can get good sounding names by using a word or 2 and it's funny.
