Why are Mewtwo and Ho-Oh so much better, cooler, so much more "legendary-feeling" than all the legendaries that came after them?

There were way less legendaries in gen 1 and 2 when they first came out. They felt rare and special because they kinda were. Now theres a metric fuck load of them

I like how mewtwo is briefly alluded to in the abandoned mansion, but you don't see him until the post game if you go fucking around in the cerulean cave. Just a single line about mewtwo being "too powerful" made him sound so ominous, and finally finding him was the tightest shit as a kid. You can say "hurr durr nostalgia" all you want, but I'll never forget all the fucking hype around him, especially back when the first movie came out. As >>49300972 has said, there's too fucking many legendaries now, so the novelty and magic is entirely gone since you kind of just expect them to be there at this point.

Cool lore. The way Gens 1 and 2 treat their legendary Pokemon are just cooler than later games. They either give just enough info to be interesting or barely anything and just leave them as forces of nature. Ho-oh resurrecting the Legendary Beasts is such a cool detail and it doesn't even remotely factor into the story of the game at all. It's just there to flesh Ho-oh, the beasts, and the world out. If they were made today the game would be about some faggy evil team trying to capture Ho-oh or whatever.

Because the movie and OG cartoon made mewtwo mysterious and creepy as hell and Ho Oh was a super saiyan version of the legendary birds we already knew and loved.
Kyogre and groudon and honestly the first 3 Regis did a great job feeling legendary

Gen 3 also integrated legendaries to the main plot and made encountering them mandatory. Everyone who played the game had to fight Kyogre or Groudon, and likely catch them. Then in Black and White you were forced to have the Legendaries, you can't even ignore them, or forcably KO them.

Yeah, I feel like it would help if the evil team really doubted if those Pokémon were real, maybe even have a few fake versions of it that depict how it may have looked before seeing it in the flesh.
Cyrus should be confident in those Pokémon existing because he's just that crazy, but other people should just not buy into it until it actually happens.

Reason 2: Ho-Oh feels like a "real" legend with its own mystery and lore, and Mewtwo is just a unique concept, a freak of nature lab experiment gone wrong, who also has a lot of mystery to him

Honestly the biggest mistake in regards to legends was made in Gen 3 by making Legendries a major plot aspect, thus forcing you to interact with them.
I also feel like when it hit literal gods in Gen 4 is when things became less impactful and just kind of whatever. Even Kyogre and Groudon weren't really "gods" just really strong pokemon that could fuck up the entire world if they were pissed off enough.

Zacian and Zamazenta are part of the royal family. Dialga and Palkia have a whole town and a set of legends dedicated to them. Solgaleo and Lunala have both an altar and a Shrine... I could go on, Ho-Oh is average at best in terms of legendary-ness. It being one of the earliest + nostalgia is what makes it stand out
