Got Sword as a gift and played it a bit over the winter break. Is the online still active? Want to get into competitive but I know people are anticipating the Arceus game.

SWSH are gonna be the most active online games until gen 9 comes out, BDSP is just gen 4 meta and Arceus may not even have online battles

There's people who still play ORAS online. Of course SwSh will be active.

online is still active but very niche

it's been announced that competitive is staying in SwSh until gen 9

if you want something frequent that can keep you in the online segment of the game, a Discord server by the name of "Shiny Hunters Anonymous" hosts frequent shiny (legal) raids

Ok that’s good. I haven’t played a game since the one on the DS and am playing catch up after my friend convinced me to get the one coming out next week. Somewhat off topic but does DLC help the online experience and where do I start in terms of making teams?

DLC helps online with a larger pool of Pokemon you can find in dens as well as legendary Pokemon is Dynamax Adventures

and by extension, higher pool of Pokemon means larger team building opportunities
