I also loved starters and would sometimes start a new save just to mess around with a different one. There was one time I accidentally saved over a save I had (I forget which one it was, I had several due to losing and getting new copies of RSE constantly as a kid) with one I had made just to mess around with Treecko. I had gotten to Rustboro and evolved it into a Grovyle, only to accidentally save over my completed previous save game out of habit of saving before I shut the system down.
I lost all of my progress and mons and started crying pretty hard with my mom trying to console me. Eventually, having nothing else, I continued on with that save and it ended up becoming one I played a lot. I don't have too many memories of saves I went through with Treecko; my favorite was always Mudkip, so I'm not sure what ended up happening with it, but I suppose it did at least have a good ending.
The reverse was another time in Leafgreen where I started a new save with Ivysaur and made it to the S.S. Anne and had to pick between my old save with Charizard or my new one I just made. I eventually shut the game down without saving, sobbing.
I was kind of a weird kid I suppose; I didn't really have any friends and I ended up just playing games and getting really attached to them.
