Different names. Different looks. Different background (it seems, based on the clothes). Different people.
They just look like the modern ones because Sinnoh pandering, also because that means your counterpart can be seen as the ancestor of a main character.

It's such a wasted opportunity. I get why they did it, but seeing the story of the grandfather of a previous MC was such a cool concept.
