You can do that in most recent games, especially the ones in Unity. I bypassed sections of puzzles in Immortals Fenyx Rising that way. It's just that you have to try harder/be more precise in those where devs put more effort.

You can see that GF had less ideas than finger in every area for the game.
Look at this map, samey with random bumps and hills, then 1 boring one dimensional landmark that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Trainer battles are few and far in between compared to the usual pokemon game. And by mini-games I'm also talking about puzzles while your out on your journey as well. Maybe there's an optional item or cave off in the distance that you need to solve a strength puzzle or some shit to obtain. The world so far is pretty barren.

I agree that I wish there were more unique areas and set pieces, rather than just one big open space with pokemon plopped in between. Like there's little burrows in the ground and you have to bait the pokemon living in them out with treats to catch them. Nest in the trees where you could find pokemon eggs if you search them enough. But maybe the other anon is right in that the guy is going too fast that there is stuff like that in there that we don't see.

isnt that the whole point of the game?
seems like a casual experience you would play for a few minutes while in the train, then play it once home at night and not having to care about details, doing shit however you feel like in that moment and clearing objectives over a long ass period of time

There are environmental hazards to keep in mind during exploring too, as apparently you can faint from falling off cliffs or entering deep water.
