I remember this being mentioned in one of those super old Gen 1 lore books that got translated, but I assumed it was retconned and forgotten.

the professor mentions it in the start of the game. Pokemon can shrink for some reason and the ball makes use of that.

Explains why it doesn't seem like poke balls require a lot of advanced technology to function (i.e. we've known since gen 2 that the originals were just hollowed out special fruit equipped with some kind of extra part).

Maybe not pokemon specific moves exactly, but certainly good emulations of them given what some psychics can do (Avery's family members in Sword and Shield are noted to not just have telekenesis but can teleport and read minds as well).

It was the story about the professor who accidentally knocked out a Mankey he was studying and the Mankey shrank and hid his glasses case.
A similar thing was mentioned in one of the recent games, there was an NPC who suggests that Poké balls take advantage of the fact that Pokémon naturally curl up when they faint, but they didn't mention the shrinking.

That has been part of the lore since Red and Blue came out, it was just never mentioned outside of Japan.

It's still a conversion to energy thing I think, just an ability/power that comes from the pokemon and the poke ball triggers it. It also only lasts for as long as it takes for them to reform at the tiny size inside the poke balls.

I recall the anime showed pokemon inside their poke balls a number of times and they always were in tiny physical forms rather than energy.

I don't remember the anime ever showing that (I haven't seen ever episode) but the Adventures manga's pokeballs are transluscent so you can see the tiny pokemon inside.

The two examples I recall are in the original series when Psyduck is shown inside its ball, and much later in the Black and White series when it shows a tsundere Dragonite reacting to something said about it while it is resting in its poke ball.

That's dumb. If all Pokemon can shrink, how come we've never seen them using that power before (aside from the move Minimize, which isn't very common)?
Seem like a random idea the writers invented without considering the implications.
