Setting this game in the past was not a creative decision. It was a technical limitation GF had to impose on themselves because they are incapable of giving us a modern, big world Pokemon game on the Switch. This is why Legends is the new format for mainline Pokemon games. It lets GameFreak be lazy and avoid having to actually put content in their games. They can sell you an empty field for $60 and tell you to catch 20 Magikarp and you will do it.
