Animations and the HP bar don't take 500 years to go by, browsing menus is really fast (that's a DS dual screen advantage though, I'll give you that).
The post-game is actually decent since the enemies levels scale to what your team later on is at, there are multiple hours of content and even before you reach the elite four, there's multiple ways someone can waste countless hours by:
- hunting hidden ability mons in hidden grottos
- filling up the dex
- hunting pokemons with specific IVs
- training pokemons to better their EVs
- shiny hunting
etc...
Unlike other pokemon games the elite four is actually challenging (even though you can still cheese it, it's more well balanced than say, X&Y which is just a walk in the park).
And then, there's the seasons mechanic which just extends even further the game. You can actually play it later on during the year and you'll get different encounters, a different scenario and even different routes that weren't accessible before.
