I want the variants of existing pokemon to stop happening until they can dial back the ridiculousness factor. Like the design philosophy for these variants always seems to be "Let's give it really long/bug body part it didn't have before, it would be funny"

The "serious" Agumon recolors mostly happened because the PSX games had a lot of palette swaps to save production time. The "joke" Agumon exist mainly because if you're going to a Digimon in a silly costume, it needs to be a recognizable one. (same reason Pokemon Go has 50 Hat Pikachu)
