It's overrated and will continue to be overrated through the honeymoon phase. I absolutely give credit to the work they did on battling as a whole, aesthetically and mechanically, and the new catching and seamless ride/travel mechanics. It's good to see progress there, although I'm not sure how many of these things will be in gen 9.
However Hisui itself is not acceptable for a triple A title, and it should be criticized for that. I'm not even talking about the graphics, which should be better, but overall I never thought they were as bad as many do. It's the fact that they just gave us 5 wild areas. There aren't any set pieces to uncover or dungeons, caves, or forests to discover. There aren't any obscure sidequests to be found in the wilderness, they are just all simple requests from people who want to see something/need a certain number of something. Even the NPCs guide you through finding the legends in postgame, it's not like you have to go out and seek out these secrets yourself. And in a game that is about exploring and self sufficiency, you don't get to use your pokemon to do anything in the overworld besides battle; they can't even move when you send them out in "follow" mode. The game is basically an extremely watered down, diluted version of those open world/monhon-esque elements everyone had been clamouring for.
I don't hate it, but this type of game needs more dev time to be great. Right now its just okay.
