I guess what is actually being said is that Pokeballs take advantage of this never before brought up ability in which all Pokemon have a survival mechanism that allows them to shrink when injured, and if the conditions are right and the Pokemon is off guard, upon becoming weak it will seek refuge inside the ball it sees and at that moment it locks and traps the Pokemon from escaping.
