The steel jaws are for crushing rocks that get in its way, since it doesn't exactly have much in the way of climbing power. They've also got noticeably less "ice casing" on their body since they don't hang out in water as much (the ice on its body is now on the top from snow landing on it and its head that it shoves into show when digging out rocks).
