He stated what he wanted to do right at the end of the XY anime if you actually paid attention. Champion league could also be taken on at the discretion of the trainer who won the league and saying he lost is headcanon considering no one stated as such within the anime itself. He also has no reason to join in on this tournament either.

this is the autism OP was talking about. The writers knew they were making a mistake with jobber froge to the had Alan beat him because the realized his Pokemon and their bond were probably stronger.

In regards to Serena they ditched her and reset Ash to be more likeable in the newer regions
