It's almost as if they finally implemented a way to facilitate pvp battles at any stage in-game without jumping through convoluted hoops to do so around that time, and felt the need to add training grounds for the times in-between IRL battles superfluous.
Plus, you know, they flat-out said the majority of players wouldn't care about it and they'd rather use that time putting something they may bother with in instead.

Until they do more wild ideas for Battle Frontiers like:
> Devolve Battles (when you deplete a mon's HP it devolves and gets its hp restored)
> Inverse Battles (XY style but done on its own)
> Hot Potato (every time you hit a mon with a move they "hold the hot potato" as it counts down turn after turn if it reaches zero the mon holding it gets KO'd instantly
