it's not that they couldn't have made it so that they could follow you it's just that you're looking at this mechanic in a way that it was not intended to be looked at it. they probably have following animations in the files and ideally they could patch that in. but they're not going to lmao

You throw out your pokemon at wild pokemon in order to trigger battles, it would be awkward to see how that would work with walking pokemon.

Why would it be? If you get mauled by a Shinx, your Pokemon isn't going to just stand there and watch. It'd pretty obviously run forward to start a battle and help you once attacks are thrown your way. It'd end up automatically throwing you into battle, which is what you'd expect.

Or maybe specific temperaments would fuck off and avoid you if you already have a pokemon walking with you. There's plenty of potential here.

if a monster is already fielded their icn should just have the trainer direct it to harvest said material rather than having to constantly throw it's ball, hell some monsters could just auto harvest when near gathering nodes similarly to palicos in MonHun. I am super excited for PLA, but I won't pretend it needs more fleshing out the same way BotW did and does.
