>>49380764they were always a thing but it was generally kept to either absolutely massive pokemon tied to some kind of magic or something (ie giant alakazam vs giant gengar, i think it was) or just believable height variation among species, even if we've seen, say, a large bulbasaur in the series, they would be large in reference to other bulbasaur, if there's a bulbasaur the size of a venusaur walking around then I've certainly never seen it in the anime.
