This is one of the best subtle changes to pokemon. On top of the seamless battling/catching, you don't have to press a fuckton of buttons as pokemon level up, try to learn moves or try to evolve. Instead you get a little HUD note that they can learn a new move or evolve and you can interact with that shit when you want to.

If you go fast with it. If you go fast in any other Pokémon game, you take less than that. SwSh, I plow through the story in for sure less than 16 hours.

This is one of the best parts of the game. The overall pace of moving between battles, load screens, and menus went from miserable to nearly seamless. Battles themselves are paced way better too, really snappy with a lot of animations sped up while still looking better than ever.

Finally some actually meaningful QOL changes that aid the average player instead of the usual """QOL""" changes that actually just aid the small minority of players that do autistic shit like shiny hunting or mass breeding pokemon for 10 hours instead of either injecting or using showdown like a normal person would.

Yeah, quality of life has improved so drastically that it's hard to even put into words. They turned the entire thing inside out and it happens to work ten times better this way. Just the way it handles move learning and forgetting blows my mind, it makes TMs feel like those archaic, outdated shit in history.

Yeah part of the reason I found the "use the anywhere box on your pokemon if you dont want exp share lmao" is that menuing in pokemon has always being abit of the pain in the ass, especially after the move from dual screens
This is one of the more minor things I hope gen 9 carries over.

it's also pretty cool that the pokemon/item hotbar thing persists in battle too. You can choose a new pokemon or use an item just by swapping to it and pressing ZR like you would outside of battle without having to use the menus

People say that it being released in January means it'll see lower sales because they're usually low arounf this time, but I feel like that's a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. Sales are low because publishers assume everyone's broke after the holidays, so they dump cheaper shovelware, AA, or indie projects in during this month to capitalize on niche markets.
I think that'd work in Arceus' favor though. People go crazy for Pokemon, and this is (at least in the eyes of the public) THE Pokemon game they've been wanting since they were kids, at least structurally, so it's an abnormally big release during a usual dry spell, which has people's attention. Plus, since nothing else is releasing during this time, then that means it has no competition. I think the January release could actually work in it's favor, but I'm not a market analyst at the end of the day, so I could be wong

Releasing in January means they have no competition, the next major release is Elden Ring, which is a month away, and the overlap between those two playerbases is pretty small.

Pokemon 'come up with a new idea' for a move as they level. You can open the bag menu and select that pokemon and 'Change Moves' where you can swap in any move it has come up with at no cost. There is a character in Jubilife that can teach your pokemon a handful of extra moves for money. Those moves are added to the same pool as the others when you go to change your moves. She can also help them master some moves (unlock agile/strong styles, but they can master those on their own by leveling up.

There's a lady in town who will teach your pokemon new moves, just for regular old cash

She's got the whole loadout right from the start so if you get say, espeon, early, you can teach it shit like dazzling gleam and shadow ball right away

Honestly one of my favourite changes is the "each menu item is assigned to a button input" thing. It's one of my favourite QOL changes from modern JRPGS and i'm happy it finally made it to Pokemon as well.

Honestly, does anyone remember that old Masuda interview where he talks about wanting to drastically simplify the battle system going forward? A lot of the changes made in this game feel like they're in line with that vision. I know some changes were made just to better suit the open world setting but I can't help but think the idea came from that

As far as I know they basically merged attack/sp attack into one buff and defence/sp defence into one buff so if you gain a buff to your attack it affects both stats.

Actually reminds me of how the Persona games do buffs. For example a tarukaja increases both your physical and magic attack, sukakaja increases your chance to hit and chance to evade, etc..

I don't mind the buffs themselves being streamlined, I just think it's kind of weird that most buffs and debuff moves are basically just the same move with different flavor text. Like, now there's no difference between Swords Dance and Nasty Plot, which is just kinda surreal to me.

What really gets me is the new turn order system, it's obtuse and feels arbitrary at best, where sometimes shit that's far beneath you in both level in speed will get an extra turn in on you for no apparent reason
