A game can be balanced around EXP gain being participants only, or all party members.
BDSP's problem is that EXP gain was balanced around participants but gives a big share to all party members, making your team over-levelled by the 4th gym if you like to explore.

No, giving Cynthia and post-game leaders competitive level teams doesn't compensate for this, especially not when you're forced to receive affection bonuses that have a chance to nullify damage or status effects.

Yes, that's why having the option to turn it off would have fixed BDSO because they just shoved it into the game without balancing it.

raise more than 6 mons, you’ll likely be at-or-under leveled if you switch them out enough, which actually makes gym challenges and the E4 more engaging when selecting who out of your team would work best.

i always enjoyed the change, yeah it should be optional but i don’t mind too much

Yes, it can be a good change because it can accommodate raising a lot more Pokémon, you spend less time raising the same number of Pokémon overall.

But, it's boring for people who plan ahead and think of what Pokémon they'd like to train in a given run. That's also kind of an issue for Sinnoh specifically because popular picks like Shinx, Starly, Buizel are available quite early on.
