Well, a new pokemon game somehow worse than the last came out. I don't need to see more than I already have, and I jumped ship on this franchise a generation and a half ago. Now I'm just back to have a laugh at those of you who haven't caught on. Since then I've explored other, better RPG's and I thought it might be nice to share some. Any of you got some recommendations? SMT is a rather different take on the monster collecting subgenre. For those yet unfamiliar, your monsters are all creatures and figures from various religions myths and urban legends, and the plots are usually simplistic, similar to pokemon, with a theme of "order vs chaos", though the Persona series is there if youre looking for more of a plot focus. Gameplay-wise however, I think the biggest difference to Pokemon is your relationship to your team. Whereas in pokemon your team is like a character build that you generally won't change much, unless you put in a lot of effort, your demons in SMT are far more disposable, and the game encourages you to switch them out, and switch often, changing and optimising your team's various strengths and weaknesses. As a personal recommendation out of the few that I've played, Devil Survivor Overclocked is a favourite of mine, with an interesting cast of characters, an SRPG system that makes you feel clever and like you're gaming the system for finding team builds and skill combinations that work well. It also has a challenging but interesting difficulty curve that you won't find in Pokemon. If you're thinking of playing the game, I recommend playing Overclocked with the undub patch. The overclocked version on 3DS adds extra endgame content (more interesting stuff you won't find in Pokemon, these days anyway), and voice acted dialogue, though I'm personally not a fan of anime dubs, hence I recommend the undub patch if you've got CFW. Post your favourite RPG alternatives in the replies. Bonus points for JRPG's but western RPG's are fun in their own ways too.

You think PLA will be better than SMTV?

>>49392981 SMTV is a bit of a low point but the bottom of a valley up high in the mountains is still higher than even the peaks under the sea.

Playing through SMT V right now, it's good but I do hate how slow levelling up is

>>49392961 I feel bad for all of the people who don't even ATTEMPT to step out their comfort zone and realise there are games that scratch that Pokémon itch better and have everything they felt missing (challenge, narrative, engaging gameplay, etc.).
But no, people get super pissy if you tell them they are playing low-quality baby games past the age of 18.

>>49393027 I don't give a fuck for JRPG's outside Pokémon anon. If I want to play a "mature" game, I go for western games aimed at adults and not just look for "pokémon, but for edgy teens too "mature" for pokémon"

>>49393027 I know right? I can never go back to even the best Pokemon games that I used to like now. It's all the same monotonous grind. There's no thought that can be put into the gameplay beyond the glorified rock paper scissors of move and pokemon types. Even the "competitive scene" is largely based on luck.
I'm having so much fun now that I'm looking at games I never tried before. Even if I don't like one game, I can just move onto another.
I hope more of these people grow up and find better games.

>>49392961 SMT peaked with SJ, 5 is ok but the story is pure ass

>>49393027 I don't play other rpgs because it's not a genre I enjoy, most other rpgs have a minute selection of characters to play with too, not very replayable
I prefer platformers, if there was a pokemon one I wouldn't play it since it wouldn't be very interesting

>>49393139 thinking of checking out SJ. Is the extra content in the 3ds version good or should I ignore it?
I've only seen stuff from 5, haven't played it myself. Story being ass is something I don't particularly mind too much from SMT since it's less of a focus. DS did have a cool one though, and I liked the setting/characters in 4.

>>49393176 I've played 5 and I see where people come from with the story. With how gameplay focused it is, it honestly feels like an NES esque game that released in 2021

>>49393160 >I don't play other rpgs because it's not a genre I enjoy you're barely playing an RPG with pokemon anyway lol just push A
it's true that you have a smaller selection of playable characters but it's not like they give your pokemon much depth of personality, and if you want to talk about gameplay your characters in other RPG's are fewer but often more customisable.
>>49393212 is the gameplay fun?

>>49392981 SMT5 is probably the worst SMT game but unlike PLA it still retains the series identity and still gives the player a fun and challenging moncap experience. Even the story, which is bad by SMT standards, is way better than PLA's

>>49392961 >a new pokemon game somehow worse than the last came out Eh, I'm actually having fun with PLA, so i'd say it's a definite improvement over the last games. But SMT is a much better series overall.

>>49392961 Yeah I’m more of a Megaten fan these days. Love DDS, Nocturne, SMT IV. Really liked P2 Innocent Sin and I’m playing Eternal Punishment now (though it hasn’t hooked me as much as IS). I can understand people having trouble trying something new when they’re so used to their favorite. That series familiarity takes time to grow to where you can pick up any game in the franchise and have a rough idea of the mechanics and all the naming conventions for spells and such.

>>49393160 I'm not a big RPG fan either, I try them and then never finish them.
But I would argue SMT (mainline at least, can't say the same for Persona) works very well because the battle system is pretty dynamic and fun; you hit hard and so do the enemies, if you exploit a weakness you earn an extra turn but the enemies can do the same. You recruit demons to your party, and when they are no longer strong enough you fuse 2 of them and get a bigger and better one (they don't even act like you feel any attachment to them to guilt-trip you for putting them on the PC).
You are constantly seeking higher power because the game will demand you to do so and if you aren't careful even a little mook can mess you up.

>>49393227 I very much enjoyed it. Nocturne is my favorite still but I like the ideas that 5 brought to the table and what it tried to do with essences, overworld exploration, etc. Curious if they'll do a midquel of sorts similar to Apocalypse sometime down the line

Only game I played from this franchise was DemiKids and comparing it any way to Pokemon is an extreme insult to pokemon and massive disservice to SMT. I like pokemon because of the pokemon.

>>49393297 I like the pokemon too, shame they won't just give us all of them. Fr though if that's what you're hung up on I'd say you should at least drop the main series. Some of the side games are at least KIND OF interesting, like the ranger series and conquest. Mystery Dungeon is also a bit shit though imo.

>>49393293 I totally get that. The constant struggle to increase your power and beat the fights where you previously got dominated is great, and coming back with a new team specifically designed to kick its ass feels like a power trip.
When you're constantly trying to get more strong demons to fall back on in case your other strong demons fall, you're effectively making each member of your party more disposable.
If I were to consider the RP part of this RPG, while Pokemon makes me feel shackled to my party, my party in SMT makes me feel like a mob boss.
