If the game wasn't so empty and visually offensive that alone would have went a long way. As is the game feels like shitty early access

Yes, tightly nit linear experiences will always be better over lazily designed empty worlds. Pokemon fans are late to everything. The rest of the industry already went through their open world phase and realized it was dumb.

If you have a big map it has to be fun enough to traverse and have enough to do to warrant it. Legends doesn't.

The older games looked simple but they weren't ugly or the 240p masked it. Legends has stretched out muddy textures and lots of jaggies. I'd take pixel art over that any day. Or a more stylized and clean approach like LGPE
