Here's hoping they're willing to go toward the disturbing end of things if they ever do Pokemon Legends Mew. Unethical research, failed experiments, sneaking through restricted areas and revealing cover-ups. It should make the Pokedex entries and ultra beast stuff in Alola look like a Hallmark Greeting Card. And maybe some twist on Ditto since it's also a failed experiment. Oh and in before "This is a series for literal newborn babies you retard it should be soft fluffy smilebunny happy hour hooray" all the time.

Seems like a good place to ask.

There's all the in game lore about mew and mewtwo. But in interviews it's been said that mew was added into the game right before release. Was the lore surrounding mew already in the game but the pokemon itself just wasnt added before that?

That's only half of the story.
Mew was ALWAYS planned as part of the lore (think about it, why else there would be a "MewTWO" if not to tease the OG?). In reality what happened was that they almost couldn't fit Mew due lack of space, but Shigeki Morimoto managed to program it in and even did the sprite without any prior testing.

Isn't Mew actually a debug mon they put there to fill the space and avoid to change the code heavily so close to the release of the game?

Like, it was supposed to exist, but just to be a part of the lore, like the Original Dragon of Unova. It exists, but not.

It already happened otherwise Mewtwo wouldn't exist. There were experiments they just have to revisit that existing plotline. Not all of it needs to be grimdark though at least some of it should be. Look at Bill's weird Pokemon experiments, we didn't even bat an eye there, is this type of science fiction really so unthinkable in this series?
